Deathgasm Too is in the works…

Back in December 2015, writer-director Jason Lei Howden posted on Instagram that he had completed writing the screenplay for what he called Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon. He said:

“There is literally more gore in the first 10 minutes than the entire first #deathgasm. If you kinda liked the first, this will make your head implode. If you thought the first Deathgasm was puerile, juvenile and dumb then Goremageddon will melt your face off and force you to barricade yourself inside, safe with some Terrance Malik and Coldplay.”

Now it has emerged that Simeon Halligan and Rachel Richardson-Jones, directors of British Manchester-based genre film festival Grimmfest, are launching a production company called Grimmfest Films. And on their production slate is Deathgasm Too.

Here’s our coverage of Deathgasm, which we thoroughly enjoyed despite a few flaws:

‘Evil is cumming…’

Deathgasm is a 2015 New Zealand comedy horror feature film written and directed by Jason Lei Howden. It stars Milo Cawthorne, James Blake, and Kimberley Crossman.

New kid in town Brodie and bad-boy Zakk quickly bond over their mutual admiration of heavy metal rock music. But when these two metal-heads unwittingly summon up a demon known as The Blind One, their dreams of stardom may just have to be put on hold

Reviews:

“Practical effects are front and center and they look wicked good. The effects crew didn’t reinvent the wheel, but they obviously had a good time bloodying up time honored traditions like gaping eye sockets and seriously wild blood splatter. And slo-mo double-sided dildo fights, of course.” Patrick Cooper, Bloody Disgusting

“In between the rampant four-letter words and the occasional partial nudity are likable attempts at humor — some sweet, some saucy.” Anita Gates, The New York Times

“The humor is crude, and not quite as funny as it thinks it is, but the horror scenes are fun, and Deathgasm never drags. It’s been hailed as a new classic by metalheads, but I still think there’s an even better heavy metal horror film waiting to be made out there.” Jim Vorel, Paste magazine

” …loads of great practical gore and splatter effects, along with some nice makeup for the look of the demons. The movie has above average production values for an indie flick and the comedy works (for the most part). It also does a decent job fleshing out key characters, so you actually care what happens to these people.” Upcoming Horror Movies

“Brodie is the every man metalhead that we can all relate too, and Medina is the girl next door that we’ve all lusted after. It’s the familiar aspects of Deathgasm that draw you in. I think if you ever listened to metal, you’ve had a friend like Zakk. Yet it’s the gory fun that keeps you watching all the way. It captures both the awkward reality and the powerful fantasy of the metalhead mindset.” Christopher Stewart, UK Horror Scene

” …this amiably dumb feature debut for New Zealand writer-director Jason Lei Howden could have used some additional polish on the scripting side to bump its bad-taste humor up from the routinely to the inspirationally silly.” Dennis Harvey, Variety

Deathgasm is brutal, bloody, fanatical fun on levels that deliver exactly what’s expected. Howden cranks the slasher genre to 11, and hypnotizes horror audiences through an onslaught of demonic mutilation that would have Dethklok themselves cheering with joy.” Matt Donato, We Got This Covered

“The pacing of the film kind of falls apart a bit towards the end with the plot seeming to not really go anywhere, the finale was too predictable and cliched for me to really get into. Despite the faults there is a lot good going for Deathgasm, the humour is worth watching it for as are the amazing practical effects…” Daniel Simmonds, The Rotting Zombie

” …Howden goes practical-heavy for gory, glorious, ridiculous, and comedic effect. It also doesn’t hurt that he clearly knows his metal, mocking only what he loves. Shamelessly low-brow, reaching a beer-fueled gleeful high with a zombie-vs.-sex toys battle, it’s a very metal tribute to the grand tradition of Kiwi splatter comedies.” Richard Whittaker, The Austin Chronicle

” …while the special effects makeup shows great skill, the writing displays little maturity. While it’s enjoyable to see enormous dildos and other sex toys used as weapons, it’s a shame the only woman in the film (Kimberly Crossman) is essentially treated as a walking trophy. There’s sticking to original tropes and there’s just being lazy.” Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

“Limitations are disappointing but somewhat understandable, as Deathgasm tends to play loud and hard for most of its run time, successfully achieving an anarchic energy before it fatigues too soon. However, its appreciation for metal and horror shines through with encouraging authority.” Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com
