SHROOMS (2007) Reviews and overview

‘Get ready to get wasted’

Shrooms is a 2007 Irish horror film directed by Paddy Breathnach (Red Mist aka Freakdog) from a screenplay written by Pearse Elliot. The movie stars Lindsey Haun, Jack Huston, Max Kasch and Maya Hazen.

Plot:

A group of American teenagers travel to Ireland to experience the trip of a lifetime, as promised by their Irish friend and hallucinogens expert Jake. As gruesome events unfold, the friends can’t distinguish between hallucination and reality.

Reviews:

“The enemy isn’t defined enough to be truly frightening – at least not until the derivative end. Student horror fans may find this worth a giggle, but it’s not the nail-biting experience the trailers promise.” BBC

” …it features one of the best nature tours in horror. The story ventures into the same neck of the woods as past films while still switching things up where it truly counts. However one might feel about the big reveal, they can’t dispute its intended shock value even if it doesn’t hold up in repeated viewings.” Bloody Disgusting

“This is quite gory and there are some creepy moments early on. It also tries to shake things up with a twist but you can see it coming a mile away. The bulk of the action is familiar; the characters are the usual mix of stereotypes and ultimately this is another dull slasher which fails to stand out from the crowd.” Eat Horror

“The attempt to pad out the run-time with the two hick characters (Ernie and Bernie) falls flat as their motivation for their behaviour is very suspect […] The drug induced moments are boring & silly (talking cows!) but become absolutely absurd once the big twist is revealed.” Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“Despite the lame script, the crisp cinematography and location save the film. And while the psychedelic visuals are a little lackluster for a movie called Shrooms, it’s trippy nonetheless.” Shirley Halperin, Steve Bloom, Reefer Movie Madness: The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide

“the film does have nice (dank) colors, the editing is pretty nifty (always a good thing to have if the deaths happen off-screen), the camera work is pretty spiffy, there are a few good laughs (loved the talking cow – wish I had experienced one back in my younger days) and, after they finally start to die, the tension is OK.” A Wasted Life
