NEKROTRONIC (2018) Reviews of sci-fi comedy horror

‘Evil gets rebooted’
Nekrotronic is 2018 Australian science fiction comedy horror film directed by Kiah Roache-Turner from a screenplay co-written with Tristan Roache-Turner (Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead).

The movie stars Monica Bellucci, Ben O’Toole, Caroline Ford and Tess Haubrich.

Plot:
Sanitation worker Howard (Ben O’Toole) discovers that he is actually a powerful necromancer who must stop the Queen of the Demons (Monica Bellucci) from consuming 1.3 million souls via a network of Nekropod power boxes in a giant pentagram around the city…

Reviews:
“Bellucci is a campy villain and her internet domination plans are beyond silly, but the accidental white hetero saviour who swoops in the save the day (at the expense of the far more qualified female protagonists no less) is at best too familiar…” Bloody Disgusting

“It’s certainly a colourful and fast-moving romp, but it fails to sustain interest and the script, which aims for but fails in delivering the smarts of something like Guardians of the Galaxy, would have benefitted from some better one liners.” Dark Eyes of London

Nekrotronic’s journey is plotted without tension or climax, lumbering through scripted motions for the sake of splattering Ghoulish Agent Smith lookalike henchmen. Major happenings conclude with nary a reason except to provide Howie’s squad with an easy victory, recalling how a character’s combustible flesh is never explained yet defeats a mini-boss.” Flickering Myth

” …very vibrant and filled with more colour than Wyrmwood, which is justification for a more riotous feeling — and the really bad jokes support that spirit. But the ultimate reason to sit through this very boring, exhaustive assault on the senses is for Monica Bellucci. She chews scenery whether it’s for the benefit of comedy or horror; no one else comes close.” Goomba Stomp

“If you are willing to put your brain firmly in park and have your senses beaten into submission by a non-stop barrage of awesomeness, then you’ll eat up Nekrotronic with a spoon; just don’t go in expecting anything other than pure ludicrous insanity for ninety-plus minutes!” Horror Fuel

” …nobody that sees Nekrotronic will expect it to be anything more than ridiculous fun. Roache-Turner delivers on that end, and shows that he has the potential to become a great director. There are some pieces still missing from the film, especially in the storytelling, that hold it back.” Keith Loves Movies

Nekrotronic is even more unruly and chaotic than the Roache-Turner Brothers’ Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. With all its flashing lights and over-the-top carnage, Nekrotronic is tailor-made for an ADD-addled generation raised on Candy Crush. That sounds cynical, but its eagerness to please is quite impressive.” J.B. Spins

Nekrotronic feels like a movie birthed from the pages of a comic book, or from a hypercolor daydream. Both the CGI and practical effects work well, blending cyberpunk stylings with startling moments of gore. The score and soundtrack work is also worthy of note…” Modern Horrors

“The film creates the world and the tech early on in the proceedings and then goes on to exploit the potential of the armaments in inventive and entertaining ways until it reaches its bloody and gory finale. Yes, it stretches credibility at times but this is part of its charm and really just adds to the sense of enjoyment.” Moviescramble

” …there’s virtually nothing here to wholeheartedly (or even partially) connect to, with the lack of any real stakes certainly preventing one from working up any real interest in or sympathy for the protagonist’s ongoing endeavors. The endless, special-effects-heavy climax ensures that Nekrotronic concludes with a whimper…” Reel Film Reviews

“In the short time that we’ve known the Roache-Turners we can say brothers know what they like and they excel at doing it their way. This new movie is still funny, gory, sexy and exciting to watch. Yet, as familiar as it feels and it is very much their brand, you cannot help but get the sense that someone was trying to catch their lightning in a bottle this time.” Screen Anarchy

“While it’s not the least bit serious, I should point out that Nekrotronic isn’t a parody either. It’s a fun roller coaster ride that rarely slows down. There are bursts of humor, mostly of a very dark variety, but they’re not the film’s main focus. For a modestly budgeted film, Nekrotronic has loads of action and very well executed effects.” Voices from the Balcony
