Seeds – USA, 2018

‘A story of temptation and monsters’

Seeds is a 2018 horror film directed by Owen Long from a screenplay by Steven Weisman, based on Long’s storyline. It stars Trevor Long, Andrea Chen and Garr Long.

When his increasingly depraved behaviour spirals out of control, Marcus retreats to his family home along the New England coast. But instead of finding solace, Marcus is haunted by his darkest fears and deepest desires.

Is he losing his mind or has something terrible burrowed deep within him? Incubating. Waiting until the climate is right. Marcus must fight to save his crumbling sanity and protect Lily, his beloved niece from a monster that lies in wait…

Seeds forever jarring and uncomfortable to watch as Marcus’s descent indiscriminately dips in and out of the horrors from both his reality and unreality. He is fighting what he hates about himself, but like the imagined creature, it will never go away. The metaphor of the monster on the outside allows us to see him reflect on what he is, and allows Owen Long to be considerate, rather than judgemental or exploitative, in the telling of such a taboo story.” BritFlicks

Seeds is a film that’s going to be very divisive. On the one hand it feels like the film is explaining away inappropriate sexual conduct by classifying it as a disease but on the other it’s a clever way to look at a very difficult and taboo subject. There is a supernatural element added into the mix that helps to illustrate Marcus’ battle and it’s often incredibly creepy.” Pip Ellwood-Hughes, Entertainment Focus

Seeds could best be described as being what Lolita might turn out to be if it were to have been written by the likes of Stephen King or Clive Barker – a slow drawn-out tale that explores the dangerous nature of forbidden desires. Not an easy watch, and one that will alienate many, it will nonetheless stay with you long after the credits.” Kat Hughes, The Hollywood News

“It’s a small, intimate story which doesn’t spell everything out – and risks sliding by without anything obvious happening until the last act, which does up the melodrama (and monstrousness).  Seeds fits in with a vein of recent indie genre cinema (The Endless, Curtain, Pod, The Void, They Look Like People) which approach American mental health issues in terms of Lovecraftian cosmic horror.” The Kim Newman Web Site

“This is also a film about denying one’s darkest and forbidden desires, and the realization of the importance of making sacrifices. Finally, the film tells us about being able to do the right thing when there are not so many options to chose from. More like a light horror film, Seeds has that rare presentable look.” Let the Movie Move Us

” …it’s up to you to make up your mind about Marcus, Lily and the monster… The kind of horror that uses humanities foibles and fragilities, to reflect on just how horrific humans – and the human condition – can be, Seeds is a powerful, oftentimes uncomfortable watch. Not so much a journey into madness but rather a journey from madness into insanity.” Phil Wheat, Nerdly

“Acting, writing, directing… Trevor Long’s performance, the study of his character and relationships and the filmmakers’ brilliant pace hits an unholy trinity of mind-altering horror and good filmmaking.” Jason Minton, Without Your Head
