The Endless – USA, 2017

‘Never go back’

The Endless is a 2017 science fiction mystery horror film directed by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, based on a screenplay by the latter. It stars Callie Hernandez, Tate Ellington and Emily Montague.

Two brothers return to the cult they fled from years ago to discover that the group’s beliefs may be saner than they once thought…

“It keeps up a good pace, balancing its mystery out across its 1 hour, 51-minute running time. The script even balances the characters out between their quirks, so they come off as more engaging and relatable. The film even manages to mix in some humor, dark or otherwise, amongst the thrills and chills. All in all, The Endless is well-worth catching…” Dave Heath, Cryptic Rock

” …a masterful offering of unearthly visuals, intense time travel theories, and clever suggestions of creatures too vast and strange to comprehend. It makes wonderful use of sound design and gives the audience precisely what they need and nothing more. Simply put, it’s absolutely magnificent.” Jonathan Barkan, Dread Central

” …while the movie has eerie moments and concepts, it’s never truly frightening either. Most of the chills are of the psychological variety, but the filmmakers stretch their limited budget to produce some effective CGI assisted shots too. Benson and Moorhead make for likeable leads, but it’s Tate Ellington as Camp Arcadia’s unfailingly polite leader Hal who makes the biggest impression…” Padraig Cotter, Dread Central

” …what makes this a true indie gem is that there is heart at the center of the story, hoping to send a message to viewers that sometimes you need to leave your baggage behind you in order to be happy. The Endless is a brave effort by Benson and Moorhead, who decided to break conventional storytelling instead of playing it safe and doing more of the same.” Brad Miska, Bloody Disgusting

” …the supernatural, science fiction, and comedic aspects aren’t the ends, just the means. They allow Moorhead and Benson (the latter once again credited as screenwriter) to take their micro-scale scenario and enlarge it on a macro level in order to expose human truths via their impact.” Jared Mobarak, The Film Stage

The Endless is a masterfully crafted genre hybrid that solidifies Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as two of the most interesting and uniquely voiced directors working today. For God’s sake, watch no trailers and read nothing else about it. Just go in cold and ready yourself for one of the best movie-going experiences of the year.” Adam Patterson, Film Pulse

“2017 has already given us some great titles in genre filmmaking, and The Endless is certainly another amazing achievement in that respect. Benson and Moorhead have outdone themselves with a thoroughly engrossing, intelligent, and shocking blend of cult and the occult.” Rob Trench, Talk Film Society

“Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead aren’t making movies to entertain at base value. Life is this scary, ever-threatening beast that offers no real answers, and their films address the beauty of unpredictability head-on […] Few filmmakers today execute on low-fi genre puzzlement with such deafening power, and that’s no mistake.” Matt Donato, We Got This Covered

“A little overextended for the straight-ahead genre market (a trimmer, 100-minute cut reputedly exists), The Endless is a demanding, rewarding picture with moments of unusual terror and awe, offering a science fiction/horror scenario on a literally cosmic scale which boils down to a study of a complicated sibling relationship.” Kim Newman, Screen Daily

In the UK, Arrow Video released a Limited Edition 2-disc Blu-ray on 2 July 2018.
