‘We all have our things.’
The Master Cleanse is a 2016 Canadian-US comedy fantasy horror film written and directed by Bobby Miller.
The film stars Anna Friel, Johnny Galecki (Rings; I Know What You Did Last Summer), Kyle Gallner, Anjelica Huston (The Witches), Oliver Platt, Kevin J. O’Connor, Diana Bang, Loretta Walsh, Josh Ssettuba, Barbara Gruen, Candus Churchill and Craig Michaelson.
Down, out, and heartbroken, Paul attends a spiritual retreat to cleanse himself and fix his broken life but soon discovers that the cleanse releases more than everyday toxins… a lot more.
“writer-director Bobby Miller’s beguiling debut feature proceeds with calm, deliberate steps down its particular rabbit hole. If the result feels a bit underpowered, narrative-wise, with modest commercial prospects at best, it nevertheless touches a chord of bittersweet feeling that a more genre-oriented thriller approach might not have managed.” Justin Chang, Variety
“Neither a comedy nor a horror pic, though it has elements of both, the film is serious about the emotional baggage its heroes carry — despite transforming it into quick-growing critters that must be killed for the sake of closure. A tough sell commercially, it will rely on big names in the cast and on (semi-helpful) Cronenberg comparisons to reach auds beyond the fest circuit.” John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter
“We’re seeing more and more movies (particularly in the indie horror world) with blatant usage of metaphor to comment on very real things. I don’t think this is a bad thing at all. It’s fun to dig deep into a difficult movie and find thematic gold, but it’s also nice to have it all right there in front of you. The Master Cleanse, while more dark comedy than horror, functions in this way and finds incredible success.” Evan Saathoff, Birth. Movies. Death.
