‘Protect the bloodline’

Underworld: Blood Wars is a 2016 American action horror film directed by Anna Foerster – her directorial debut – from a screenplay by Cory Goodman.

It is the fifth entry in the Underworld franchise and the sequel to the 2012 film Underworld: Awakening, with Kate Beckinsale and Theo James reprising their roles. The other main cast includes Theo James, Tobias Menzies, Lara Pulver, and Charles Dance (Forbidden EmpirePatrick: Evil Awakens; Pride and Prejudice and Zombies).

Reviews:

“It exists only to fulfill the fantasy of its fan base and at this point, one has to question as to whether they exist. As a franchise, it’s not even of a level of the putrid Resident Evil films. There is no rhyme or reason to its existence and it has the balls to call for a further goddamn sequel.” Flickering Myth

“The Underworld series has always been exhaustively unimaginative and literal-minded, resistant to the idea of vampires and werewolves as metaphors or seductive figures. The closest thing it has to subtext is accidental; fixated on undead politics, strict rules, and firearm maintenance, it suggests, just maybe, that being a vampire is a lot more tedious than it’s cracked up to be.” A.V. “This has been a regular payday for Beckinsale and she certainly gives it her all, but you have to wonder why she bothers, certainly now that we know what she can do with more interesting material. Surely there’s something just as lucrative and not quite as undead.” The Guardian
” …the only notable aspect of the film is that it marks the feature directorial debut of Anna Foerster, a rare example of a woman being allowed to direct a reasonably large-scale franchise film. Alas, all it proves here is that a female director can make a film of this sort that is just as listless, derivative and perfunctory as one made by a man.” RogerEbert.comunderworld-blood-wars
