Scouts vs. Zombies

Three scouts and lifelong friends join forces with one badass cocktail waitress to become the world’s most unlikely team of heroes. When their peaceful town is ravaged by a zombie invasion, they’ll fight for the badge of a lifetime and put their scouting skills to the test to save mankind from the undead…

Reviews:

” …. entertains with gross out humor, hilarious one-liners, and an action packed climax I was pulled in to. Through and through, Landon’s characters are likable and very charming, even when they’re being obnoxious, and we want to see these underdogs prevail.” Felix Velasquez, Cinema Crazed

Shaun of the Dead this ain’t. Nor is it even Zombieland. The humour here is resolutely toilet-level, concentrating (inevitably) on adolescent male obsessions with bodily functions, fluids and odours but fortunately, when the undead start to appear, the focus changes to gross-out gore and splatter and the occasional neat visual gag… ” Paul Mount, Starburst

” … essentially one prolonged chase with a few interludes in a strip joint (called Lawrence of Alabia) and at a secret high-school dance to which the scouts aren’t invited. As zombies’ heads are shot off and feral cats and even more feral old ladies prey on the hapless adolescent heroes, you can’t help but warm to the cheery irreverence of the storytelling.” Christopher B Landon, Independent

“The gags are hoary (gropey male virgins, rotting female lap dancers, Re-Animator-style cunnilingus), the gore plentiful but unoriginal (Braindead did the tooled-up set piece better way back in the 90s), the scares nonexistent (The Evil Dead this ain’t). Putrefied audiences may get a few yucks from the crass schoolboy blend of tits and offal…” Mark Kermode, The Observer

Scouts-Guide

“As horror, Scouts Guide is too frivolous to thrill. As comedy, it leans too much on scenes that see the teens groping big-breasted topless zombies or the beasties sexually molesting young girls. The aim here seems to be to replace startled gasps with shocked guffaws.” Noel Murray, Los Angeles Times

“If the film lacks bite and panache, it’s still true to the spirit of predecessors like Re-Animator and Zombieland in its fondness for wild horror and terrible taste laughs. Although the female characters are often leered at, this is an equal opportunities offender that also sports an unflappable action heroine (Sarah Dumont).” Emma Simmonds, Radio Times

“This is male juvenile fantasy at its most tired, its most obvious, its most banal, and its most infuriating. Boy dorks get to save the day, and their friendship is reaffirmed as stronger than ever while the humanity of women is dismissed.” MaryAnn Johanson, Flick Filosopher

“There’s this one shot, almost seven seconds long, in the horror-comedy Scouts’ Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. And the shot is just a huge pair of breasts, up close, in slow-mo, bouncing “hilariously” on camera. I know — breasts are so funny like that, aren’t they?” Kevin Maher, The Times (UK)

[NB. Critic Kevin Maher may have missed the point that Carter, a teenage boy, is so entranced by actually seeing a real woman’s naked breasts – even though she’s dead – that his whole life, and the movie, literally stops, even amidst a zombie apocalypse! The shot is about a young hormonal male’s fixation. And a pair of bouncing breasts, admittedly. There’s an extended (literally) shot of an old man’s penis being stretched (a cinema first?) but this is presumably ok as penises are deemed to be acceptable comedy material but breasts should be taken very seriously – HORRORPEDIA].
