Review:

For a third entry in a franchise, Whannell’s movie is a decent and worthy effort. The initial manifestations and family drama are reasonably effective and engaging. Once the ghost hunting team move in, we’re into familiar territory that will please some, yet irritate others.

Still, there are certainly moments to savour amidst the Poltergeist-like shenanigans. Insidious: Chapter 3 is worth a look, for sure, despite the obviousness of the enterprise.

Other reviews:

“The envelope remains resolutely unpushed, and the need to function as a multiplex scare-machine precludes the emotionality of The Babadook. Yet, with its slow burn reveals and leftfield jolts, it’s been more carefully constructed than most series’ third chapters.” The Guardian

“It’s like the fun-house ride at the amusement park. You jump out of your skin the first few times the skeleton pops out at you. By the end of the ride, you’ve gotten a good look and it’s not so much scary as hokey.” New York Daily News

“The mystery aspect never really pays off, and several of the supporting characters are a bit too thin to ever really matter. For the most part though, it doesn’t matter one bit … under Whannell’s direction the hysteria and frenzy that fuelled the previous films has been replaced by a darker, more sinister sensibility.” IGN

“Around the one-hour mark, once Whannell finally has the whole ghost-hunting band back together again, Insidious: Chapter 3 gives off a few fleeting sparks of pleasure and conjures up a couple of memorably creepy images (including that of a half-formed woman with no face, hands, or feet).” Variety

“The Insidious series is one that has issues, like any other horror franchise, but it’s also eerie, and disturbing, and always leaves a haunting little sense of dread for days after a viewing. Composer Joseph Bishara’s impact on these films cannot be understated…” Bloody Disgusting

” …in all three movies these set pieces have played out like a walk-through of a ghost train, with various ghouls and ghosts popping out of the shadows to spook the psychic, always of course accompanied by an ear-splitting sound effect that sounds like a crash test dummy being launched through the windscreen of a FIAT.” The Movie Waffler

” …it wasn’t nearly as scary as it thought it was, and a lot of that had to do with its overuse of jump scares that ruined every ounce of tension being created throughout the film. In the end, there are some truly haunting moments in the movie that are completely wasted by predictable PG-13 scares. Bummer.” Rhino’s Horror

Choice dialogue:

Elise Rainier: “Loving someone is just delayed pain, isn’t it? Eventually, you’re gonna lose them, one way or another.”
