Aliens: Colonial Marines is an upcoming video game to be released February 12 by Gearbox Software and is to be published by Sega for Microsoft Windows,PlayStation 3Wii U and Xbox 360. It is the third Aliens title that Sega has produced: the first was Aliens vs. Predator in 2010, and the second was Aliens Infestation in 2011.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a first-person shooter which puts the player in the role of a United States Colonial Marine named Cpl. Christopher Winter. The player will have access to iconic weapons from the movie such as the flamethrower, pulse rifle, smartgun, shotgun, pistol, RPGs, and robotic sentry turrets. Players will also be able to use welding torches to seal doors and motion trackers to detect unseen enemies.

Initially it was announced that the game would involve squad-based gameplay, allowing the player to issue orders to AI-controlled marines using context-sensitive commands. However, Gearbox later revealed that this feature was dropped to make gameplay more accessible.  Aliens: Colonial Marines was originally planned to have no HUD to provide the player with onscreen information.

The players will gain experience points when killing enemies and completing certain objectives. These experience points will allow players to customize the appearance of their character, purchase upgrades for weapons, and unlock other skill sets, all of which carry over to other gameplay modes.

The primary enemies of the game are the xenomorphs from the first three films, which include the FacehuggerChestburster, and “Drone” alien from Alien, the “Warrior” and the “Queen” aliens from Aliens, as well as the “Runner” alien from Alien 3.

  1. The authenticity of the Aliens franchise drips from the screen with each blip of your motion tracker and the graphics are top notch, so when you first start off you think “holy shit I’m in for an uncomfortable ride here!” Excitement builds, bum cheeks clench, and the heart races until…..MEH. The first xenomorph pops in without the slightest bit of tension or ceremony and BRRRRRIP, BRRRRRIP, a couple of shots and you blow it’s slippery features clean off; leaving you with the horrible feeling that you may well have wasted your hard earned pennies. These aren’t the terrifyingly intelligent monsters from the movies; they are like lobotomised chimps that obligingly jump into your bullet stream and lay down for an nice acid bubble bath while a tear wells in your eye for all the “could have beens”. Now Alien Isolation, there’s a game with full throttle terror and a creature worth your time.
