The Day of the Animals (re-released as Something is Out There) is a 1977 American horror film thriller directed by William Girdler (Three on a Meathook; Abby; The Manitou) and based on a story written by Edward L. Montoro.

A Film Ventures release, the movie reunited stars Christopher George and Richard Jaeckel, director Girdler and producer Montoro from the previous year’s hit film Grizzly. Leslie Nielsen — later in the horror spoofs Repossessed and Dracula: Dead and Loving It also stars.

The depletion of the earth’s ozone layer causes animals above the altitude of 5,000 feet to run amok, which is very unfortunate for a group of hikers who get dropped off up there by helicopter just before the quarantine is announced…

Reviews:

“Just when you think things can’t get any better a bear lumbers into the camp and a shirtless Nielsen wades in to wrestle it ! Holy Crap !! For any other movie this would be the climax but there’s still more – massed German Shepherd attacks, cars full of snakes and leaping rats.” Alvin Brickrock, The Oak Drive-In

“An emotionally scathing and surprisingly involving movie of murderous mayhem and all-too-human monsters, Girdler’s ode to the great outdoors is pure exploitation pleasure.” William P Simmons, Eccentric Cinema

” …the most routine kind of thrills, packed with all the lack of imagination Girdler lavished on Grizzly.” Geoff Brown, Time Out Film Guide

” … watch Leslie Nielsen transforming before our eyes into a bare-chested murderer and would-be rapist who hits children and threatens women. You may feel that you’ve waited your whole life to see a movie in which Mr Nielsen ill-advisedly challenges a grizzly bear to a wrestling match. Watch Day of the Animals and feel fulfilled at last.” Steven West, Eat My Brains
