THE ALIEN DEAD (1980) Reviews of Fred Olen Ray’s zombie flick

The Alien Dead is a 1980 American science fiction horror film directed by Fred Olen Ray (The Tomb, Evil Toons, Super Shark) from a screenplay co-written with Martin Nicholas.

Filmed deep in the swamps of Central Florida, The Alien Dead includes the final screen appearance of former Flash Gordon serial star Buster Crabbe and barely squeezed by on its meagre shoestring budget of $12,000. Also known as It Fell from the Sky and Swamp of the Blood Leeches.

The Alien Dead was released on Blu-ray in a Special Edition limited to 1,000 units, all signed by Fred Olen Ray…

Also included here is the director’s first feature “effort”, The Brain Leeches, along with a revealing commentary track, plus an unadvertised bonus, The Halloween Planet, an unaired children’s TV Special featuring serial Superman, Kirk Alyn and the cast and crew of Alien Dead, along with a new commentary track.

A meteor strikes a houseboat in the swamps near a southern town, causing the people on the houseboat to become zombies. The zombies feed on the alligators in the swamp and when they run out of alligators, they start going for the citizens.

When people start to disappear, a local scientist tries to figure out what’s happening and how to stop the zombies from killing more people…

Reviews:
” …the gore is surprising in what is essentially a 50s sci-fi monster movie transplanted to 1980; an elderly couple, after providing some comic relief with a squabble, are massacred by the creatures in broad daylight, with the husband being gutted and eaten alive (his dog even starts eating his innards!) and the wife impaled on a pitchfork!” DVD Drive-in

“Sure it’s terrible and to call it rough around the edges would be a major understatement but underneath it all there’s a certain innocent charm…” The Grindhouse Cinema Database

“Cheap, goofy, amateurish and unpretentious, The Alien Dead exceeds its lowly reputation. A combo of Night of the Living Dead, Attack of the Giant Leeches, and 70s exploitation films, Alien Dead features hillbilly townsfolk, incompetent cops, topless swimmers, multiple gore and cannibalism scenes, and a general spirit of good-natured cheap thrills.” David Elroy Goldweber, Claws & Saucers
