THE WOLFMAN (2010) Reviews and overview

The Wolfman is a 2010 American remake of the 1941 classic werewolf horror film of the same name. This film’s second half was significantly altered and expanded from the original film’s plot. Directed by Joe Johnston, the film stars Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving. While receiving mostly mixed reviews from critics, the film grossed more than $140 million worldwide.

Plot:

In 1891, Ben Talbot is confronted by an unknown creature in the Blackmoor woods. He tries to escape but is mauled and killed by the beast.

Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), Ben’s fiancée, has contacted his brother, Lawrence Talbot (Benicio del Toro), the world-renowned Shakespearean actor, saying that Ben disappeared a month ago. Lawrence leaves his theatre tour to return to his family’s estate in Blackmoor where he has an uneasy reunion with his estranged father, Sir John (Anthony Hopkins).

Later, it is revealed that Lawrence’s mother, Solana, had committed suicide when he was a boy. Lawrence saw his father standing over her dead body, after which he was sent to an insane asylum in London, ostensibly for suffering delusions.

Ben’s body, found the day before, has been stored at a slaughterhouse. When Lawrence views his brother’s remains, he is horrified. Among Ben’s personal effects is a medallion that Ben apparently purchased from gypsies.

Later at the local pub, Lawrence overhears the locals discussing the killing. Many blame the gypsies who are camped outside the town, while another patron claims there was a similar murder several decades earlier, and a werewolf was the suspected killer…

Reviews:

” …lots of things to jump out of us and look creepy but virtually nothing that’s truly scary. Featuring a bewildering performance from Benicio del Toro, who appears to be faking his American accent, and Anthony Hopkins swanning around a dilapidated mansion in tiger skins, The Wolfman is a strange but ultimately boring mess.” Cinema Blend

“Working wonders as a partner to the original, Joe Johnston pleases immensely with an intelligent, scary, and gory monster movie that works on many levels of creativity and originality while also remembering its roots firmly planted in the Universal legacy where Lon Chaney once roamed.” Felix Vasquez, Cinema Crazed

” …The Wolfman has been made with care by Joe Johnston, and is well-photographed by Shelly Johnson and designed by Rick Hendrichs. The music by Danny Elfman creeps around the edges. Del Toro makes Lawrence sad, worried, fearful, doomed.” Roger Ebert

Rick Baker, Benicio Del Toro and Dave Else
