Freddy vs. Jason – USA, 2003

‘Place your bets’

Freddy vs. Jason is a 2003 American slasher horror film directed by Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky) from a screenplay by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (Starship Troopers, 2018; Friday the 13th, 2009).

The film is a crossover between the A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises. It is the eighth and eleventh entries in their respective series, pitting their antagonists, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, against each other.

Freddy (Robert Englund) has grown weak, as the citizens of Springwood have suppressed their fear of him. In order to regain his power, Freddy resurrects Jason (Ken Kirzinger) and manipulates him into traveling to Springwood to cause panic and fear. However, while Jason succeeds in causing enough fear for Freddy to haunt the town again, he continues to intrude on Freddy’s territory and steal his potential victims. This ultimately sends the two monsters into a violent conflict…

Reviews:

” … there is precious little room for innovation here, but Freddy vs. Jason incorporates enough iconic imagery and references, intentional humour… and gruesome demises to keep most of its promises and rank as one of the better entries in both camps.” By John Charles

“It, perhaps inevitably, gets cartoonish for the arterial-spraying mano a mano finale that the whole movie has been built around, and making any major slasher character sympathetic (as happens to Jason here) is never a good idea, but Freddy vs. Jason is the kind of crowd-pleasing romp only a self-serious fool would fail to admit to enjoying.” Steven West, Horrorscreams Videovault

“Sadists should enjoy the film’s requisite death match but I can’t imagine anyone’s interest in either ghoul being so significant that the filmmakers are so hesitant to ever declare a winner. One last wink is merely indicative of the laziness of this tolerable but instantly forgotten dud.” Slant Magazine

” … a polished, gruesome, fast-paced movie that is best experienced as part of a large audience that knows what to expect and is just looking for a good time. Fans of the previous Nightmare and Friday the 13th outings will no doubt be pleased with the number of nods there are to these films. This is never going to win any serious awards, but it is a thoroughly entertaining experience…” Michael Mackenzie, The Digital Fix

  1. It was a long wait from schoolboy’s wish-list, to rumour, to that clip at the end of the abysmal Jason Goes to Hell, to release but it was worth it – for me at least. I think it captured the essence of both series in a nice, tight, and disturbingly moist package.
